Far-infrared fluorescence, lipophilic carbocyanineDiIC₁₈(5)-DS Contains sulfonic acid groups to improve water solubility. It fluoresces weakly in water but emits extremely bright and photostable fluorescence when incorporated into membranes. The incorporation of sulfonate groups into these DiI analogs improves water solubility. In a lipid environment, it has an ultrahigh extinction coefficient and a short excited state lifetime (∼1 nanosecond). When added to cells, the dye diffuses laterally within the cell membrane.
